Kris Labelle is a Calgary comedian, actor, and film director, who is best known for his outrageous style and one day last summer ran into some unexpected and, at the time, unwanted publicity.

Remember the story on social media about Calgary comedian Kris LaBelle and the animal rights protesters at this year’s Stampede? The encounter and picture went viral and Kris was accused of planning to stir up controversy with the protesters to promote himself. Quite believable given the fur coat and hat he was wearing. Well, that’s not quite what happened. Here’s the real story from the hilariously outrageous father and comedian Kris.

“I was on my way to do a photo shoot and video at the Calgary Stampede and I happened to be wearing a 1940’s vintage red fox fur coat which is part of my comedy routine. I‘m not generally one to wear animal skins and am opposed to any animal cruelty but this outfit was ready-made and given to me as a gift. It also came with a great fur hat. So on my way on to the Stampede grounds I encountered a group of people protesting. But I had no idea what they were protesting until I was close enough to read their protest signs. So there I was decked in fur and they were protesting cruelty to animals at Stampede. You can’t imagine how surprised I was. I had no idea that this would end up being a news story and go viral. It was at that moment that my friend took a picture of the bizarre meeting between Kris and the protesters it created a lot of controversy on social media. It was like a lion seeing a bear and both asking what are you doing here? We were all polite to each other. Believe it or not, we ended up agreeing to meet after Stampede and talk further, maybe even to work together to promote the treatment of all animal life humanely.”
