Patricia is a Dentist, a Numa Model and more!

Calgary's own Triple Threat Patricia Truong is taking the fitness and modelling world by storm. Today we sat down with WBFF Pro Fitness Model Patricia Truong to learn more about the woman behind one of Calgary's most recognizable faces. She is a dentist, professional fitness model, commercial stock model, and mom of two.

Were you born and raised in Calgary?

I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated here at the age of four. My father was an engineer in Hong Kong and had to retrain once we moved to Canada. My early years were tough; my family didn't have a lot of money and my dad delivered pizzas in the evening while he went back to school to earn his engineering license in Canada. I was humbled by the experience, having to learn a new language and adjust to life in Canada. My father taught me the value of hard work and this has stayed with me throughout my life; when I have my toughest times and feel like giving up is when I reflect back on my simple beginnings and remind myself of how far I've come over the years.

Was fitness always a passion for you?

Believe it or not, fitness has been relatively new to me. As a child, I was quiet and shy and I focused on getting good grades in school. I always wanted to become a doctor, so I worked for many years to achieve it. After finishing my science degree in Biology and Psychology, I went on to pursue my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. During this time, fitness took a backseat in my life. All I had time to do was study, eat, and sleep basically. After getting married and having children, it was an even lower priority to stay in shape. I always made excuses that I didn't have time. I needed to do something for myself, one day it finally hit me that I had to make a change.

When did you start working out and what inspired you to do so?

After getting married and having children, I wasn't happy with how I looked and felt; I wanted to do something for myself outside of my role as a wife and mother. I wanted to set a fitness goal for myself to get into the best shape of my life; I thought competing in my first fitness competition would be a great way to keep myself accountable and to work towards a concrete goal. I got myself a coach and started lifting weights for the first time in my life in 2015. I trained for four months and competed in my very first competition, the WBFF Calgary, in June of 2015. I won the competition in the city and was awarded my Pro card, a rare occurrence in the fitness world. I have since competed at the WBFF World Championships in Las Vegas and have been featured in a variety of fitness magazines internationally as a professional fitness model. I have been lucky enough to expand my role as a fitness model by delving into commercial and stock modelling as well. I have met so many wonderful people along the way and I am blessed to be able to inspire others by sharing my fitness journey.

In addition to fitness modelling, you are also one of Calgary's most recognizable faces as a commercial stock model. What do you like most about stock modelling?I model for local companies to produce stock photos, which are images of everyday people doing everyday things; they are the images you see on billboards, internet ads, or posters in stores and buildings. What I love most about it is that you never know where the images will show up. It's fun to have friends send me photos from all over the world, because they spotted me in a magazine, on a billboard, or on an app. What I love most is that I do stock modelling with my husband and children as a family, we are sent all over the country to shoot in exotic locations and make family vacations out of our assignments. Very few professional fitness models are able to cross over into commercial modelling but I have been lucky enough to be able to do both!

How do you balance career/school/family and fitness?

It is challenging to balance everything I have on my plate, but the best way for me to do this is to be organized. I am always on the go and I try to make the most of my day; I have everything organized in notes and calendars and reminders. Running from the dental clinic to my kids extracurricular activities to a photo shoot then to the gym has me on my feet all the time. I always have gym gear and runners in my car because you never know when you will need them! I keep a few gallons of water in my car at all times. My front foyer always has a suitcase ready to go for a photo shoot because sometimes it's a last minute call to fly out on assignment.

What's your best fitness tip?

Fitness is a lifestyle. It is something that you should enjoy and makes you feel good inside and out. Make it a priority and try to incorporate it into your daily routine and I promise it will get easier over time. If you reach a plateau in your workout routine, try something different to keep yourself interested and on track. Don't be afraid to change things up or to set a new fitness goal for yourself, just remember never to give up!

What is your best tip for success and happiness?

My philosophy has always been, "Do what you love and love what you do." Life is short, so you should follow your passions whatever they may be. It is never too late to start dreaming and to make your dreams a reality! Just make sure that whatever you choose to do in life is something that is fulfilling, makes you happy, and fills your bucket. And never be afraid to fail, because the journey is more meaningful than the outcome. If things don't turn out the way you planned, at least you know you tried and it is never too late to try again until you reach your goal. Stay positive and smile often!
